The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), has formally defined who constitutes the University community under its newly launched University Act, 2025 (Act 1157), marking a major shift in the institution’s legal and governance framework.
Under the new Act, membership of the University now explicitly includes staff, students, alumni, retired employees, honorary degree awardees and principal officers. This legal recognition did not exist under the 1961 Act that established the University.
Explaining the reforms at the official launch of the Act, the Chair of the Committee on the Act, Professor John Tia Bugri, said the revised legislation introduces comprehensive governance and administrative measures aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and transparency.
